Master Data Management (MDM) fundamentals

Prerequisites: modern-data-architectures

When the same customer, product, or account exists in five systems with five slightly different spellings, which one is true? Master Data Management (MDM) answers that question by producing a single, trusted view of core business entities.

What you will learn

  • What master data is and why duplicates are dangerous.
  • How MDM builds a golden record through matching and survivorship.
  • Why trusted master data is a prerequisite for reliable agents.

What is master data?

Master data is the set of core entities your business depends on - customers, products, suppliers, locations - shared across many applications. Unlike transactional data, it changes slowly but is referenced everywhere, so inconsistencies ripple widely.

The golden record

MDM consolidates records that refer to the same real-world entity into one authoritative golden record:

  1. Matching identifies records that likely represent the same entity (for example, “Acme Corp” and “ACME Corporation”).
  2. Survivorship decides which field values win when matched records disagree (for example, most recent, most complete, or most trusted source).
  3. Stewardship lets humans review and resolve ambiguous matches.

Garbage in, hallucination out

An agent that retrieves conflicting duplicate records cannot reason reliably. A golden record gives agents one consistent answer to 'who is this customer?'

Why this matters for agents

Agents act on entities - they update a customer, check an order, or route a case. If the underlying identity is ambiguous, the action is unsafe. Trusted master data is what lets governance and observability (the MAF capabilities you will meet in later tracks) trace an action back to the right entity.
